Missouri Families Are Providing $11.6 Billion in Unpaid Care: Is Your Family Carrying Too Much?

A striking number was released by AARP Missouri in January 2026 that every family with an aging loved one should sit with for a moment. Missouri family caregivers provide $11.6 billion in unpaid care each year, helping family members live independently at home and in their communities. That is not a national figure. That is Missouri alone.

Behind that number are real people. Adult children who have quietly reorganized their entire lives around a parent's needs. Spouses who have not slept through the night in months. Siblings who are managing medications, doctor appointments, meal preparation, and personal care on top of full-time jobs and families of their own.

If that sounds like your family, this post is for you.

The True Scale of Family Caregiving in Missouri

Most family caregivers in Missouri are caring for an adult, and in the majority of cases that adult is a parent. The work they do is real, demanding, and largely invisible to the systems and institutions around them.

Two in five caregivers in Missouri experience high emotional stress while caregiving. One in five experience seven or more days a month of poor physical health. Nearly one quarter have difficulty taking care of their own health while they focus on their care recipient's needs. And one quarter feel alone in carrying this responsibility.

Read those numbers again. These are not edge cases. These are the majority experience of family caregivers in Missouri right now, in 2026.

What Is the Cost of Carrying This Alone?

The cost of unrelieved family caregiving is not abstract. It shows up in ways that are deeply personal and cumulative.

It shows up in the career opportunities that were quietly set aside. In the relationships that became strained under the weight of constant stress. In the health appointments that kept getting rescheduled because there was never a good time. In the grief that built up without a space to process it because there was always something more urgent to attend to.

Missouri State Director Craig Eichelman stated clearly in January 2026 that too often caregivers carry this responsibility alone, often putting their finances, health, and jobs at risk. And as Missouri's population continues to age rapidly, the demand on family caregivers is only going to grow.

The State of Missouri recognizes this. Missouri's Master Plan on Aging, launched in 2026, identifies supporting caregivers' physical, emotional, and financial burden as critical to supporting the older adults and adults with disabilities in Missouri. But a 10-year state plan does not help a family caregiver who is exhausted today.

You Need Support Right Now, Not in a Decade

Professional in-home care is not a replacement for family love. It is a way to make sure that love is sustainable over time. When a professional caregiver takes over the daily tasks of personal care, meal preparation, medication reminders, and household support, family members are freed to be present in the ways that only they can be.

You can sit with your parent rather than rushing through a task list. You can have a real conversation instead of a care handoff. You can show up rested instead of depleted.

At Roberta's Health Care Services, we work every day with Missouri families who were carrying too much before they found us. We provide compassionate, professional in-home care that gives family caregivers genuine relief and gives their loved ones the consistent, skilled support they deserve.

You do not have to keep carrying this alone.
